Three juveniles have been arrested in connection with a shooting that occurred inside a Publix grocery store in Cane Bay, leaving three people wounded.
Shooting at Publix Grocery Store
According to Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the Publix at 1724 State Road just before 9 p.m. Thursday after reports of a shooting. Sheriff Duane Lewis confirmed that the shooting was a targeted attack.
Investigators said the suspects, including 17-year-old Antwan Green and two 16-year-olds, entered the store and quickly located their target. Green allegedly fired a handgun, striking the intended victim as well as two innocent bystanders.
Victims Injured
One victim, a woman shopping with her children, was shot but managed to escape the store and seek help at a nearby business. Another victim, a Publix employee working in the self-checkout area, was also injured.
The intended victim was found at the front of the store with multiple gunshot wounds.
Suspects Flee and Are Captured
After the shooting, the suspects fled in different directions. Green and one other suspect ran toward Black Tom Road, while the third suspect tried to get a ride from a stranger at a nearby gas station. The stranger ordered an Uber for him and later provided crucial information to authorities.
The suspects were quickly apprehended, with Green found by K-9 units as he fled through a neighborhood.
Charges Filed
Antwan Green, who is being charged as an adult, faces three counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He is currently held at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center.
The two 16-year-olds have been charged with accessory after the fact of a felony and have been transported to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.
Sheriff Condemns Violence
Sheriff Lewis condemned the attack as a “senseless act of violence” that endangered innocent families and workers. He expressed concern over the increasing involvement of juveniles in violent incidents, urging parents and community members to be aware of this growing issue.
The sheriff also praised the swift response from local agencies, which helped resolve the situation quickly.
