A Pennsylvania woman has been charged with multiple crimes, including homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence (DUI), after causing a fatal crash on Interstate 476 that killed 50-year-old motorcyclist John J. Sweeney Jr.

The tragic incident occurred in the spring of 2025 and has led to a series of charges against Onanyeli Rosario-Mesa, 25, who was allegedly driving the wrong way on the interstate when she collided head-on with Sweeney.

Fatal Crash on March 30, 2025

On March 30, 2025, at approximately 9 a.m., Rosario-Mesa was driving southbound on Interstate 476 in Lehigh County while in the northbound lanes, where Sweeney and other motorcyclists were riding. Rosario-Mesa’s Honda HRV allegedly collided head-on with Sweeney’s motorcycle.

The crash occurred in foggy conditions, and a local TV station, WFMZ, shared video footage that showed one person appearing to record the erratic driving moments before the crash.

The collision tragically killed Sweeney, a beloved father and motorcycle enthusiast. Authorities reported that when they arrived at the crash site, Rosario-Mesa was present and admitted to her involvement. She allegedly said, “It’s all my fault, I was tired and falling asleep. I thought I bumped into something and then woke up.”

Arrest and Charges

Following the crash, authorities conducted a blood test on Rosario-Mesa, which allegedly revealed a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.1%, above the legal limit of 0.08%. Rosario-Mesa was charged with multiple offenses, including homicide by vehicle while DUI, homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, five counts of recklessly endangering another person, DUI, and driving the wrong way.

Although the investigation moved forward, a warrant for Rosario-Mesa’s arrest wasn’t issued until April 7, 2026. Lehigh County District Attorney Gavin Holihan explained that delays in cases like this are common, as investigators take time to ensure accuracy and gather all necessary evidence, including videos, digital evidence from cellphones, and crash reconstruction data.

A text message sent by Rosario-Mesa about 90 minutes before the crash added to the investigation. In the message, she allegedly wrote, “I hate alcohol I be talking too much nonsense,” indicating that she had been drinking before the incident.

Manhunt and Arrest

After failing to surrender following the arrest warrant, the case was transferred to the U.S. Marshals Task Force in Allentown. The Marshals received an anonymous tip suggesting that Rosario-Mesa was hiding in Philadelphia with her boyfriend.

Authorities traced her boyfriend’s location to an apartment on Stanwood Street in Philadelphia, where they apprehended Rosario-Mesa on April 7, 2026.

She was subsequently arraigned in Lehigh County and is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on May 12, 2026.

Remembering John J. Sweeney Jr.

John J. Sweeney Jr. is remembered by his family and friends as a devoted father of two who loved riding his motorcycle, playing pool, and spending time with his family and cherished dog, Boomer.

His tragic death has left his loved ones devastated, and the case against Rosario-Mesa has sparked conversations about the dangers of drunk driving and the severe consequences of impaired decisions behind the wheel.
