A Pennsylvania mother accused of killing her 5-year-old adopted son forced him to drink from a toilet and search for food at night, prosecutors said during her murder trial.
Pennsylvania Mother on Trial in Adopted Son’s Death
Lauren Maloberti, 36, is facing charges including first-degree murder and criminal homicide in connection with the 2023 death of her adopted son, Landon Maloberti.
Prosecutors said Landon suffered severe abuse and neglect before dying in a hospital days after being admitted.
Prosecutors Describe Alleged Abuse
During opening statements, prosecutors claimed Landon was deprived of food, isolated from others, and humiliated inside the home.
Authorities alleged the child was forced to drink from a toilet and secretly search for food in the kitchen after bedtime.
Assistant District Attorney Cassidy Hatten told jurors that Landon was “isolated, mistreated, terrorized and killed.”
Child Suffered Serious Injuries
According to reports, Landon was taken to a hospital in January 2023 while unconscious.
Doctors allegedly found dozens of bruises, cuts, brain swelling, and severe internal injuries. One doctor reportedly described the condition as “torture.”
The child later died at a Pittsburgh children’s hospital.
Defense Says Cause of Injuries Unclear
Lauren Maloberti’s attorney argued prosecutors cannot prove exactly what caused the fatal injuries.
The defense claimed investigators failed to fully determine what happened inside the home.
Witnesses during the trial testified that Lauren’s relationship with Landon worsened over time and that she often complained about his behavior.
Lauren’s husband, Jacob Maloberti, who also faces charges in the case, is expected to testify against her.
If convicted of first-degree murder, Lauren Maloberti could face life in prison without parole.
