58-year-old Barry Lee Garza has been sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Amber Jo Thomas. The sentence was delivered by Judge Carol Kuhnke.
Garza had earlier pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and assault with intent to murder. In return, prosecutors dropped an additional firearms charge.

The incident took place on August 3, 2023, in Saline. Authorities said Garza drove to the location, waited for the right moment, and attacked Thomas while she was on a break outside her workplace.
He shot her multiple times, including in the neck. A 67-year-old man who was with her was also injured in the attack. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Thomas later died from her injuries.
Arrest After Attempted Escape
After the shooting, Garza fled the scene in a car. Police later found the vehicle after it crashed. When officers approached him, he refused to cooperate and was eventually stopped using a Taser before being arrested.
