A heartbreaking incident in Missouri has left a family grieving after a young child lost his life in a fall from a high-rise building. The case has also raised concerns about supervision and safety in residential spaces.
What Happened in St. Louis
According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, 26-year-old Tarvis T. Phenix Jr. has been charged with first-degree endangering the welfare of a child resulting in death.
The incident took place on April 10 at an apartment building on Forest Park Avenue in St. Louis. Police were initially called after the father reported his 3-year-old son missing.
Timeline of Events
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage that showed what happened before the tragedy:
- Around 11:52 p.m., Phenix left the apartment alone
- About 40 minutes later, the child exited the apartment by himself
- He wandered into the hallway and reached the elevator lobby
- There, he climbed onto a bench placed near an open window
According to reports, the child then climbed onto the window ledge and fell from the 11th floor to the ground below.
Discovery of the Child
Officers later found the toddler outside the building. Sadly, he had died from the fall. The child was later identified by family as Tarvis Jr., lovingly called “T-3.”
Charges Against the Father
Prosecutors say the father knowingly created a dangerous situation by leaving the child alone in the apartment. As a result, he is now facing serious criminal charges.
Authorities believe the lack of supervision directly contributed to the incident.
Safety Concerns Raised by Family
Family members have also pointed out possible safety issues in the building. They claimed that:
- Hallway windows were often left open
- There were no locks or protective screens
However, officials have not confirmed whether these conditions will affect the case. The focus of the charges remains on the alleged lack of supervision.
Ongoing Investigation
The St. Louis Housing Authority is also conducting a separate investigation into the building’s safety conditions, alongside the police inquiry.
Remembering “T-3”
Family members described the child as deeply loved and cherished. His sudden loss has left a strong emotional impact on everyone who knew him.
