A shocking domestic incident in Escambia County has led to a murder charge after a man allegedly shot his stepdaughter following a minor disagreement at home.
Man Arrested After Fatal Shooting
James Pelzer, 64, has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of his stepdaughter, Alanda Cuffee, 39.
According to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, Pelzer called 911 himself after the shooting and was taken into custody without resistance.
What Happened in the Home
Investigators say the incident began with a small moment in the kitchen:
- Pelzer tried to move past Cuffee
- Her mother asked her to step aside
- Cuffee responded that he could say “excuse me”
After that:
- Pelzer left the room without saying anything
- He returned shortly after with a handgun
- He allegedly fired multiple shots at Cuffee
Victim Found at Scene
When deputies arrived:
- They found Cuffee unresponsive on the floor
- She had multiple gunshot wounds
- She was pronounced dead at the scene
Police also recovered the firearm inside the house, reportedly placed near the front door.

Authorities say Pelzer admitted wrongdoing at the scene, telling deputies he had “messed up.”
The victim’s mother told investigators:
