A disturbing case in Boonville has led to multiple serious charges against a man accused of posing as a healer and being linked to the death of an infant.
Man Charged in Baby’s Death
Sam Shetler, 42, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of a 6-month-old boy.
Authorities say the child’s parents took him to Shetler, who presented himself as a “holistic doctor” within the Amish community.
What Happened
According to investigators:
- The baby was showing serious breathing issues
- The parents brought him to Shetler for treatment
- He allegedly used a “lavender breathing treatment”
- The child was later sent home without proper medical care
Shortly after, the baby was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead.
Medical Findings
An autopsy revealed that the infant was suffering from:
- Multiple viral infections, including RSV and COVID-19
- Pneumonia caused by these infections
Medical experts said the child might have survived with proper medical treatment.
Allegations About the Suspect
Authorities say Shetler ran a place called Mercy and Truth Retreat, where he was seen as a trusted healer in the community.
Investigators allege that:
- He discouraged the use of traditional medical doctors
- He relied on alternative treatments like oil diffusers
- He failed to properly monitor the baby’s condition
Additional Serious Charges
Shetler is also facing several unrelated but serious charges, including:
- Sex trafficking
- Kidnapping
- Sexual abuse-related offences
These allegations came up during a broader investigation into his activities.
Current Status
He is currently being held without bond at the Cooper County Jail, and his next court date is scheduled for May 13.
