A weekend incident in Lexington County has led to the arrest of a teenager after shots were fired during a public event, raising concerns about safety in community spaces.

According to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, the incident happened Saturday at Crooked Creek Park.

Deputies reported that:

Teen Arrested and Charged

Authorities arrested Najee Thompson, 18, from Newberry.

He is facing multiple charges, including:

  • Using a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs

According to deputies, Thompson claimed he fired the gun because he believed the area was “the country.”

Another Minor Involved

Officials also reported that:

  • Another minor at the park was found with a firearm
  • The minor was cited and later released to a parent
