Golf Carts Banned on Ocean Boulevard
Officials in Myrtle Beach are planning to ban golf carts on Ocean Boulevard during the busy holiday weekend.
This decision is part of a larger effort to control heavy traffic and ensure public safety as thousands of visitors arrive for Memorial Day, which is considered the unofficial start of the tourist season.
New Traffic Rules for the Holiday Weekend
To manage the expected rush, authorities are working on a new traffic plan. Key changes may include:
- One-way traffic on Ocean Boulevard (southbound only)
- Northbound lane reserved for emergency vehicles
- Road restrictions from May 22 (6 a.m.) to May 25 (6 a.m.)
- Limited access to certain streets like Chester Street, Withers Drive, and Yaupon Drive
Officials said the plan is nearly final and aims to improve traffic flow and emergency response times.
Pedestrian Control and Safety Measures
Large crowds on sidewalks and boardwalks have been a major concern in recent years. To manage this:
- Barricades will be used to keep pedestrians on sidewalks
- Police may clear vehicles if traffic becomes too congested
- Extra officers will be deployed across the area
These steps are meant to reduce confusion and improve safety for both drivers and pedestrians.
Strict Youth Curfew Enforcement
Law enforcement will also strictly enforce curfew rules:
- Under 17 must not be alone in the downtown area after 9 p.m.
- Citywide curfew from midnight to 6 a.m. will also be enforced
There are some exceptions, such as being with a parent, going to work, or emergencies.
Why These Changes Are Happening
In previous years, police used a traffic plan called SEVAP (also known as “flushing”) to manage crowds. However, officials stopped using it earlier this year due to concerns that it was hurting tourism and local businesses.
Recent incidents, including fights and a past shooting during spring break, have also pushed officials to take stronger action for safety.

Authorities are still unsure how many people will visit this year. Rising fuel prices and global issues may affect travel plans.
