Aloka, the loyal Indian street dog accompanying Buddhist monks on their “Walk for Peace” across the U.S., underwent successful surgery on one leg at the Charleston Veterinary Referral Center in South Carolina.
Peace Walk Overview
The journey spans about 3,700 kilometers from Texas to Washington, D.C., covering 10 states over roughly 120 days, started in October 2025 by 19 monks from the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center to promote peace and compassion. Aloka, a former stray who joined them during a similar 100-day march in India, has become a viral symbol with his calm demeanor and heart-shaped forehead marking.​
Surgery Details
The hourlong procedure, initially estimated at 2-3 hours, addressed a leg issue while the group reached South Carolina, en route to Chester County by January 12, 2026. Monks reported Aloka resting comfortably under close veterinary supervision post-op.​
