North Charleston, South Carolina – The son of a 76-year-old South Carolina lady is one of two people charged with maltreatment after she died of sepsis.
Kevin Carl Clark, 40, and Victoria Delaune, 33, have been charged with neglect of a vulnerable adult that resulted in death, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
On July 29, deputies went to a demand for assistance regarding Kevin Clark’s mother, Dianne Clark, aged 76. She was discovered unresponsive, and paramedics pronounced her dead on the scene.
According to sheriff spokesman Lexi Douglas, the subject was found in “highly unsanitary conditions,” wearing a dirty adult diaper and with bed sores actively infested with maggots. Her dwelling environment appeared to be infested with insects and heavily contaminated with feces, blood marks, and other bodily fluids.
Deputies said Kevin Clark and Delaune were Dianne Clark’s caregivers, and their negligence of her hygiene contributed to her death.
According to the affidavit, the victim died of sepsis caused by osteomyelitis, which is an infection of the bone or bone marrow.
She was diagnosed with a Stage 4 pressure ulcer on her lower back, which caused her lower spinal column to protrude through her skin. The exposed spinal area became infected with feces.
Deputies also allege Dianne Clark’s medication bottles haven’t been replenished since September 2024.
Both suspects were booked at the Charleston County Jail.
