Coastal South Carolina and Georgia Freeze Warning: Bitter cold, wind chills near 20 degrees early Tuesday

Charleston, SC – A strong blast of Arctic air will hit southeast Georgia and South Carolina on Monday night, prompting a Freeze Warning and Lake Wind Advisory for the Lowcountry and Central Midlands, with forecasters warning of subfreezing temperatures, strong winds, and dangerous lake conditions until Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, temperatures are forecast to drop into the mid to upper 20s inland and near freezing along the coast, with wind chills in the upper teens to lower 20s before daylight Tuesday.

The Freeze Warning is in effect starting at 9 p.m. Monday through 9 a.m. Charleston, Beaufort, Savannah, North Charleston, Hilton Head, and Statesboro are among the cities affected on Tuesday. A Lake Wind Advisory is also in effect for Lake Moultrie and other nearby lakes, where gusts of up to 30 mph and 2-3 foot waves will produce hazardous conditions for small craft.

Forecasters warn that frost and freeze conditions could harm crops and damage vulnerable pipelines, while strong winds will make it feel even colder. Residents are asked to cover plants, bring pets inside, and secure outdoor goods before the cold front arrives.

Boaters should avoid area lakes throughout the advisory time. Conditions are predicted to improve gradually by Tuesday afternoon as winds lessen and temperatures begin to rise.
