North Charleston, South Carolina – A North Charleston community has been working with the city to establish a Historic District in order to help preserve and safeguard the Liberty Hill area.
Liberty Hill has been an important part of North Charleston’s African American tradition for over 150 years. However, residents fear that rapid development would destroy that history forever.
The community wishes to maintain Liberty Hill’s culture and encourage intelligent, affordable development in the region in order to strengthen the neighborhood’s identity.
According to community organizers, being a historical district could benefit the neighborhood economically by providing access to grants and other funds through historic preservation projects.
“It’s an opportunity for the city to show that development doesn’t mean erasing your history, and growth doesn’t mean destroying your history,” said Seth Whipper, a lifelong Liberty Hill resident.
The city of North Charleston has been working on this idea, and they say the next step will be a property survey to assist establish particular features for the historic area.
According to the city, this paperwork will serve as the foundation for any design requirements that are implemented as a result of historic district approval.
