The coroner has identified the victims of two different Berkeley County fires

Moncks Corner, South Carolina – The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office has released the names of the victims who died in two separate fires that occurred several days from each other.

Colt Roy, Assistant Fire Chief for Central Berkeley Fire and EMS, responded to a fire on Merrell Avenue in Bonneau at around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday on Assembly Lane. A few hours later, the coroner’s office went to the scene of a burning camper.

Susan Umphlett Landes, 68, of Moncks Corner, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to Coroner Darnell Hartwell. A automobile also caught fire.

At around 5:30 a.m. Sunday, firefighters and the coroner’s office responded to a structure fire on Assembly Lane in Moncks Corner.

Coroner Darnell Hartwell said that Leroy Johnson Jr., 83, of Bonneau, was declared dead at the scene.

The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division has been tasked with conducting an investigation, together with the coroner’s office, the State Fire Marshal, and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.
