CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. – A Charleston man has been sentenced to life in prison after a jury found him guilty of murder and weapons charges in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Charrod Phillips.
Life Sentence Handed Down
After a three-day trial, Javeon Breon Kayshard Campbell, 22, received the maximum penalty Wednesday for:
Murder
Possession of a weapon during a violent crime
The sentence ensures Campbell will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Surveillance Footage Shown to Jury
Jurors watched graphic security footage from the store where the shooting occurred. The video showed Campbell walking up behind Phillips, who was standing at the checkout counter, before firing three close-range shots into his back.
Witnesses at the scene also testified, identifying Campbell as the shooter.
Prosecutors Respond
Ninth Judicial Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson praised the life sentence, saying:
“I am grateful to Judge [Benjamin H.] Culbertson [for] maxing out this cold-blooded executioner.”
The case was prosecuted by Special Counsel Stephanie Linder and Assistant Solicitor George Smit, with assistance from Investigator Dustin Morris.
The sentencing brings closure to a case described by prosecutors as a cold-blooded execution, with Phillips’ family and the Charleston community left to grieve the loss of a teenager whose life was cut short.
