Tri-State Weather Alert: 90s Heat With Evening Thunderstorms Across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut Sunday Night

Scorching heat will affect the New York metro area on Sunday, with temperatures reaching into the 90s before evening thunderstorms bring some relief. The combination of heat and humidity will lead to moderate heat risks, especially for vulnerable populations.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, high temperatures are expected to reach 94 degrees in Newark and Trenton, 92 in Poughkeepsie, and around 91 in Danbury and Hartford. New York City itself will peak near 91, with slightly cooler temperatures in coastal spots like Montauk and Islip, which will stay in the low 80s.

Thunderstorm chances remain low during the day but increase sharply by Sunday evening into early Monday. Rain probabilities will climb to near 40% across Long Island and coastal Connecticut, with storms capable of brief downpours and gusty winds. Commuters and late-night travelers should prepare for slick roads and possible delays.

Health officials are urging residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and check on neighbors without air conditioning. Power grids may also face added stress as cooling demand spikes.
