Thunderstorms capable of flash flooding are expected to move into eastern North Carolina by early Thursday afternoon, with potential impacts to travel along U.S. 70 and U.S. 17. The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City has issued a 60% chance of rain for Newport, Beaufort, and surrounding areas after 2 p.m. Thursday.
Flash Flooding and Travel Delays
These storms could bring rainfall totals between half and three-quarters of an inch, increasing the risk of standing water and localized flooding, particularly on low-lying or poorly drained roads. Motorists are urged to avoid flooded routes and allow extra time for travel during peak afternoon hours. Wind gusts could reach 16 mph.
Flash flooding remains the primary hazard, especially in Carteret, Craven, and Onslow counties.
Rain and Thunderstorms Continue Into Thursday Night
Showers and thunderstorms may persist into Thursday night, with thunder possible before 8 p.m. On Friday, expect more scattered storms with a high of 86°F. Storm chances will drop to 30% Friday night and Saturday, providing a break before another brief round of showers on Sunday.
Weekend Outlook: Mild and Partly Sunny
Saturday will bring partly sunny skies and dry conditions for most of the Crystal Coast, with highs around 87°F. However, don’t forget your umbrella on Sunday, as the chance of thunderstorms returns.
Drier Weather Expected Early Next Week
By Monday and Tuesday, rain chances will drop, with drier, milder conditions expected across the region.
