A man caused quite a scene at Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, on Sunday, leading to a lengthy and unusual police response. The incident began around 2 p.m. when officers were called to Vickery’s Bar and Grill on Shrimp Boat Lane for reports of a disturbance.
Disturbance at Vickery’s Bar and Grill
According to the Mount Pleasant Police Department, 41-year-old Joel Gratton approached a man and asked to get on his boat. When the man refused, Gratton became angry, using profane language and jumping into other boats. He eventually jumped into the water, causing further chaos by blocking boats from being able to move. Witnesses also reported that Gratton was on a private dock across from Muddys, which had clear “no trespassing” signs posted.
Evading Arrest and Threatening Officers
Police located Gratton floating in the water, still swearing and obstructing the waterway. Despite being told he was under arrest for disorderly conduct, Gratton refused to cooperate, swimming and shouting for officers to leave him alone. As officers tried to approach, Gratton allegedly threatened to assault and kill them. The situation quickly escalated, with backup from the Charleston Harbor Unit and the Coast Guard.
Long Standoff in the Water
For about an hour, Gratton swam in circles, evading authorities. A video of the incident posted on Instagram showed Gratton’s attempts to avoid arrest by swimming away from the officers. After getting tired, he finally swam to a Coast Guard boat, where he was held until Mount Pleasant officers could take him into custody.
Charges and Arrest
Gratton was arrested and charged with trespassing, felony threatening the life of a public official, resisting arrest, and public disorderly conduct. After being booked at the Al Cannon Detention Center, he was released on a $697.50 bond.
The bizarre incident at Shem Creek serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of public disturbances and how authorities must respond swiftly and effectively. Gratton’s resistance to arrest and his threats toward officers highlight the seriousness of such offenses, which can result in severe consequences for the individuals involved.
