Auto break-ins have risen in North Charleston, with a total of 155 incidents reported over the months of June and July 2025. While the number isn’t considered alarming for the city’s size, it serves as a crucial reminder for residents to stay vigilant and take steps to secure their vehicles.
Increased Break-ins During Summer Months
According to Al Kuechler, Deputy Chief of Patrol for the North Charleston Police Department (NCPD), auto break-ins tend to rise during the summer months, particularly when school is out and juveniles are more active. In June, there were 74 reported break-ins, and in July, the number climbed to 81. Kuechler attributes much of this increase to the higher number of cars left unlocked during these months. In fact, 59% of the reported break-ins between June and July were due to car doors being left unlocked.
Stolen Firearms and Year-to-Date Trends
Kuechler also revealed a concerning detail: 29 guns were stolen from vehicles in the two-month period. This highlights the potential dangers associated with car break-ins, especially when firearms are involved.
When comparing year-to-date data from May 2024 to May 2025, there has been a slight 3% increase in auto break-ins. However, Kuechler pointed out that the numbers for June and July were actually lower than the previous year. In June 2024, there were 105 break-ins, and 125 in July 2024, showing a decrease in incidents in 2025.
Common Locations for Break-ins
Police say certain locations are more prone to auto break-ins, particularly shopping centers and apartment complexes. “Our biggest concerns, of course, are Tanger and Centre Pointe shopping areas,” Kuechler said. In apartment complexes, the high volume of parked vehicles creates more opportunities for break-ins.

To protect your vehicle from break-ins, police strongly advise following some simple preventive measures:
Always lock your car: One of the most effective ways to prevent break-ins is by simply locking your vehicle.
Don’t leave valuables in plain sight: Items like bags, electronics, and even small change can attract thieves.
Never leave guns in your car: Storing firearms in vehicles makes them easy targets for criminals.
Ensure cameras are working: If you have security cameras at home or your business, make sure they are functioning properly and are pointed at areas where cars are parked.
By taking these steps, residents can significantly reduce their risk of falling victim to an auto break-in.
