A driver was detained in a DUI collision that left two Charleston police officers hurt

A Charleston man is facing driving under the influence (DUI) charges after authorities said he crashed into a Charleston Police Department cruiser on I-26. The incident occurred at around 10:20 p.m. when officers were assisting a disabled vehicle.

The Crash and Officer Injuries

According to Charleston Police Department officials, the crash happened while two officers were helping the disabled vehicle. The officers were struck by Quintero Pedro Trejos, who was later arrested and charged with DUI (1st offense) by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Both officers were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Fortunately, they were released shortly after and are expected to make a full recovery. Charleston Police expressed their gratitude for the officers’ recovery, calling the situation a reminder of the importance of attentive, safe, and sober driving.

Road Closure and Traffic Impact

Following the crash, westbound lanes of I-26 were closed between Septima P. Clark Parkway and Mount Pleasant Street as authorities investigated the scene. The road was reopened shortly after midnight, allowing traffic to return to normal.

Charleston Police’s Statement

“We are grateful that the officers are expected to make a full recovery, but this is a glaring reminder of the importance of attentive, safe, and sober driving,” said Charleston PD in a statement, urging drivers to remain vigilant and safe on the roads.
