CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry unveiled its new Live 5 Exhibit on July 20, 2024, offering visitors a hands-on experience of what it’s like to be part of a television production. The broadcast-themed exhibit provides an exciting, interactive environment where children can explore the world of TV broadcasting.

The exhibit features a mini anchor desk, camera equipment, and a weather wall, all housed inside a downscaled facade of WCSC’s building in West Ashley. It gives young visitors the opportunity to step into the shoes of a TV anchor or meteorologist and learn the basics of weather reporting. The weather wall is a highlight, allowing kids to interact with a green screen and experience the fun of showing the weather like a pro.

Exciting Grand Opening

The grand opening was celebrated with special moments, including a social media contest where five lucky families won the chance to have one-on-one chats with Live 5 First Alert Chief Meteorologist Bill Walsh. The families also had the opportunity to use the interactive green screen to try out weather reporting themselves.

Karen Coltrane, President and CEO of the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, shared that she had seen similar mini-news station exhibits in other children’s museums, but this one was especially designed with local partnership in mind. “It’s a great way for kids to learn while having fun in a creative, hands-on environment,” Coltrane said.

Exhibit Available Through 2029

The Live 5 Exhibit is set to be a permanent feature at the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, running until at least 2029. The museum is located at 25 Ann Street in downtown Charleston, making it an exciting new addition to the city’s educational offerings.
