A Missouri man has been arrested and charged with the murder of his grandmother after a fatal shooting that occurred late Wednesday night in Carrollton, Missouri. Dakota A. Sweeney, 28, faces charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action following the tragic incident.
The Fatal Shooting
The shooting took place at a home on West 14th Street in Carrollton, a small town located approximately 70 miles east of Kansas City. Carroll County law enforcement received a call around 10:25 p.m. about a shooting at the residence. Upon arrival, a Carroll County deputy found the victim, a woman, already deceased from a gunshot wound.
A witness at the scene identified Sweeney as the shooter, and he was found still at the residence. The suspect was arrested without incident and taken into custody. The following day, Sweeney was formally charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
Details of the Incident
According to a probable cause affidavit, the violence appeared to be sudden and unprovoked. The victim’s husband, Sweeney’s grandfather, described the shocking nature of the crime. He stated that Sweeney had been sitting on a couch for about 30 minutes when, without warning, he pulled out a handgun and shot his grandmother in the head while she was seated on a different couch in the same room.
Earlier in the evening, Sweeney and the victim had reportedly argued about his failure to do his fair share of household chores. This disagreement appears to have been a catalyst for the violent outburst.
Investigation and Arrest
The investigation moved swiftly. After speaking with the victim’s husband, the deputy arrested Sweeney at 10:29 p.m. and discovered a holster on his person. The charging document notes that Sweeney’s actions indicated a significant danger to others due to his willingness to shoot and kill his grandmother inside their home, without any warning.
Sweeney is currently being held without bond, according to reports from local radio station KTTN.
