WASHINGTON D.C. — The suspect accused of attempting to storm the White House Correspondents’ Dinner with a firearm has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, who professed to be part of a progressive collective known as “The Wide Awakes.”
A Modern “Remix” of Abolitionist Roots
“The Wide Awakes” is a loosely-organized group that traces its origins back to the 1860s, drawing inspiration from a group of abolitionists who supported President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. These early members were known for wearing colorful costumes and engaging in rowdy public displays of support for the anti-slavery cause, particularly during the presidential election of 1860.
The modern Wide Awakes, however, have no formal ties to the historical group and were founded in 2020 by a collective of artists. They use similar tactics of colorful costumes, art, and public performances, applying them to contemporary political activism and marches. The group has since expanded into a diverse and loosely-knit collection of like-minded individuals.
Group’s Philosophy and Membership
According to the group’s website, The Wide Awakes aim to promote nonviolence and creative liberation, advocating for diversity and the questioning of existing norms. Their slogan emphasizes “infinite, disruptive, enlightened, visionary” ideals, with a strong belief in the power of creative self-expression to challenge the status quo.
“We can emancipate ourselves without violence,” the website states. It also invites anyone to create events or art under the Wide Awakes banner, further emphasizing the group’s inclusive, open-ended nature. The website suggests participants call on local DJs, musicians, speakers, and artists to plan community events, emphasizing a sense of fun and celebration in their activism.
Allen’s Alleged Involvement and Radical Views
While it is unclear exactly how Cole Allen was affiliated with the group, authorities have confirmed that he considered himself a member. It is known that Allen participated in nationwide anti-Trump “No Kings” marches in March 2024, though it remains unknown whether his involvement was specifically tied to The Wide Awakes or if he was acting independently.
Allen’s sister told investigators that he frequently expressed radical political beliefs, speaking of wanting to do “something” to fix the world. He was an active user of Blue Sky, a liberal alternative to X (formerly Twitter), where he made over 1,000 posts that often criticized President Trump and Republicans.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner Incident
On the night of Saturday, April 25, 2024, Allen attempted to storm the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, an event attended by numerous top government officials, including President Trump. Authorities said he sent a rambling anti-Trump manifesto to his family just 10 minutes before the incident, expressing his discontent with the political landscape.
As Allen approached the ballroom where the dinner was taking place, he was tackled to the ground by Secret Service agents before he could gain access. Moments later, a flurry of gunfire erupted in the hallways outside the ballroom, leading to an immediate evacuation of the event.
Investigation and Motive
While Allen’s exact motivations remain under investigation, his apparent anti-Trump sentiment and involvement with a group espousing political activism and disruption point to his anger toward the political status quo. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and Allen’s background to fully understand the events leading up to the shooting attempt.
