A Wisconsin man has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide after police say he stabbed his mother to death inside her apartment before calling 911 to confess to the killing.

Man Allegedly Called 911 After Killing Mother

According to investigators, 27-year-old Michael J. Hurlburt called police on Friday night and told dispatchers he wanted to report a homicide.

When operators asked how he knew about the crime, Hurlburt allegedly replied, “I killed her.”

Police said he identified the victim as his 56-year-old mother, Lisa M. Bragg-Hurlburt, and claimed he stabbed her around 40 times with a kitchen knife.

Victim Found Dead Inside Apartment

Officers responded to the Half Moon Lake Apartments in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where they found Bragg-Hurlburt lying in a pool of blood.

Investigators recovered a bloody kitchen knife near her body.

According to the medical examiner, the victim suffered 44 stab wounds, mostly to her neck and upper back.

Suspect Allegedly Planned the Killing

During police questioning, Hurlburt allegedly said he had thought about killing his mother before because she had been “mean to him” during his childhood.

Investigators said he admitted planning the attack earlier that day before going to Dairy Queen for what he described as a “last meal” before his arrest.

Police said Hurlburt told detectives he asked to speak with his mother alone before attacking her inside the apartment.

Statements Made to Police

According to court documents, Hurlburt also made claims about being “gang stalked” by the U.S. government and Chinese authorities.

He allegedly told investigators he blamed his mother for making him “crazy” and said he wanted to “make a statement” to the rest of the family.

Hurlburt remains in the Eau Claire County Jail on a $1 million bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 6.
