A beloved crossing guard in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, has tragically died after being struck by an alleged drunk driver on April 30, 2026. Katy Wells, who had served the community for over 40 years, was fatally hit by a vehicle on LA Highway 16 around 3:30 p.m. local time, during the afternoon school closure.
The Incident
Wells, 64, was on duty when a vehicle traveling northwest struck her. She had dedicated many years to serving in various capacities within the Livingston Parish Public School System (LPPS) and the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office (LPSO). Wells had previously served as a crossing guard at Seventh Ward Elementary and Gray’s Creek Elementary in Denham Springs, where she was a familiar and cherished presence.
Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard confirmed that the driver, 64-year-old Darren Goudeau, has been charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) (first offense) and vehicular homicide. The charges were later upgraded to a second offense after it was revealed that Goudeau had a prior DWI arrest in September 2022.
Community’s Loss
Wells was remembered by both the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office and Livingston Parish Public Schools for her years of dedicated service. The Sheriff’s Office described her as a “true servant to her community” and expressed deep sorrow over her passing. The school district also paid tribute to Wells, acknowledging the deep impact of her kindness and commitment to the community.
“We are deeply saddened to share the tragic loss of Katy Wells, a beloved member of our community who was taken from us far too soon,” the district stated on their Facebook page. “Her kindness, commitment, and presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.”
The Aftermath
As the community mourns Wells’ loss, the Livingston Parish Public Schools system has asked for prayers and support for her family. Sheriff Ard also extended his condolences to Wells’ loved ones and the many people whose lives she touched during her decades of service.
Wells’ death highlights the devastating consequences of drunk driving, and the community is left grieving the loss of a dedicated public servant who was known for her generosity and kindness.
