One person died and two were brought to the hospital after a drowning incident on Folly Beach

One person died and two others were hospitalized following a drowning off Folly Beach Pier, South Carolina.

Incident Details

On Wednesday, Charleston County EMS responded around 3:08 p.m. for three distressed swimmers near the pier. A man, later identified as 30-year-old Fawaz Ali Murshed from Yemen, was found unresponsive in the water and was pronounced dead at James Island Emergency Department at 4:19 p.m.

Additional Victims

Two other men who attempted to assist Murshed swallowed water and were transported to MUSC with minor injuries. They were treated and released.

Witness Accounts

A surfer reportedly found Murshed unresponsive near the pier, potentially tangled or having hit the structure. Witnesses described a chaotic scene with police and emergency responders assisting the victims.

Safety Advisory

Charleston County Parks and Folly Beach officials reminded the public not to swim within 200 feet of the pier, to learn to identify rip currents, and to follow posted signs, flags, and safety instructions.
