A Kansas father has pleaded guilty after his 1-year-old daughter was fatally shot by her 3-year-old sister, who allegedly found his unsecured handgun inside their home.
Father Pleads Guilty in Child’s Death
Michael Tejeda, 26, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, and two counts of aggravated child endangerment, according to court records from Sedgwick County.
As part of the plea deal, prosecutors dropped a more serious first-degree murder charge.
Shooting Happened Inside Family Home
The incident happened on Feb. 28, 2025, at the family’s home in Wichita, Kansas.
According to investigators, Tejeda called 911 after the shooting and told dispatchers that his 3-year-old daughter had shot her younger sister.
Police said Tejeda admitted he had been watching the children while their mother was away and had left his handgun within reach.
Gun Was Left on Fireplace Mantel
Tejeda reportedly told investigators he removed the handgun from his waistband and placed it on the living room fireplace mantel, which was about four feet high.
He admitted he “knew better” and should have stored the weapon somewhere safer.
According to police, Tejeda was in his bedroom changing clothes when he heard a gunshot. He later found his 1-year-old daughter on the couch with a gunshot wound to the head, while the firearm was lying nearby.
Child Had Shown Interest in Gun Before
Investigators said Tejeda told them the 3-year-old had previously been curious about the gun and had commented on it before the shooting.
The older child was later taken for a forensic interview but reportedly did not discuss the incident.
Sentencing Scheduled for July
Under the plea agreement, both prosecutors and defense attorneys are expected to request a midrange prison sentence with consecutive terms.
Tejeda is scheduled to be sentenced on July 9.
