Berkeley County will commemorate "Carolina Days" with revolutionary-era events

Berkeley County is preparing to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with a special series of events called “Carolina Days,” highlighting the county’s Revolutionary War connections and patriotic history.

The weeklong celebration will feature historical presentations, live performances, readings of the Declaration of Independence, and the unveiling of a new memorial honoring local Revolutionary War patriots.

Officials say the program is part of the county’s ongoing Berkeley 250 American Revolution commemoration efforts.

Events Begin With Lafayette Presentation

The celebration officially starts on Thursday, June 25, with a presentation titled “Lafayette and the War for Independence.”

The event will be led by Joe Volpi at the Daniel Island Library.

Volpi is known for his work commemorating the bicentennial of Marquis de Lafayette’s historic American tour and his contributions to Revolutionary War education.

Revolutionary War Performance Scheduled at Old Santee Canal Park

On Saturday, June 27, award-winning actor Chris Weatherhead will perform “Rebecca Brewton Motte and the Revolutionary War.”

The performance will take place at the Interpretive Center inside Old Santee Canal Park.

The presentation will explore the story of Rebecca Brewton Motte, a South Carolina patriot remembered for her role during the Revolutionary War.

Declaration of Independence Readings Planned

Historical interpreter Jeff Neale will conduct live readings of the Declaration of Independence during the celebration.

The first reading is scheduled for Sunday, June 28, at Moncks Corner United Methodist Church.

Neale will return on July 4 to open the Town of Moncks Corner’s Independence Day Festival at the Regional Recreation Complex Events Field.

Officials say the readings are intended to recreate the spirit of Revolutionary-era America.

New Patriots’ Memorial Signage to Be Unveiled

As part of the America 250 celebrations, Berkeley County will also introduce new Patriots’ Memorial signage at Revolutionary Park on Epson Plantation Drive.

The memorial honors local patriots who fought during the American Revolution and contributed to the nation’s fight for independence.

County leaders say the project helps connect modern residents with the stories and sacrifices that shaped South Carolina history.

Celebration Aims to Educate Community

Organizers say the Carolina Days program is designed to educate residents about local Revolutionary War history while building excitement ahead of the nation’s semiquincentennial celebrations.

The events also highlight South Carolina’s important role in the American Revolution, particularly in Berkeley County and the surrounding Lowcountry region.
