A South Carolina woman has gone viral on TikTok after sharing a frustrating restaurant experience that ended with her group leaving without paying for their meals.
TikTok user Hannah Revels said she went on a double date with her husband and another couple at a restaurant in Isle of Palms. According to her video, the group expected a busy wait on a Saturday night but did not expect the evening to become so chaotic.
Her video explaining the incident has now received hundreds of thousands of views online.
Group Waited Hours for Entrées
Hannah said her party first waited about an hour just to get a table.
After finally being seated, drinks and appetizers arrived quickly, giving the group hope that service would move smoothly. However, their main meals reportedly never arrived for a very long time.
According to Hannah, the reality television show “Southern Charm” was allegedly filming inside the restaurant that evening, and she believed the production activity contributed to the delays.
As the night continued, the group reportedly became frustrated and asked if they could simply pay for their appetizers and drinks and leave.
Restaurant Eventually Comped Entire Meal
Hannah said their server apologized and offered to comp the entrées while encouraging the group to wait a little longer for the food.
Eventually, the meals finally arrived, but by then it was already late. The server reportedly packed the food to-go for the customers.
At that point, Hannah and her group decided they no longer wanted to pay for the experience.
According to her account, the restaurant’s staff and management agreed to fully comp the entire meal, meaning the group did not leave without permission or refuse payment illegally.
Dine-and-Dash Laws Explained
While Hannah’s situation ended with restaurant approval, leaving a restaurant without paying is generally considered a crime in many states.
The act is commonly treated as “theft of services,” and penalties can vary depending on the cost of the unpaid bill.
Smaller unpaid tabs may lead to misdemeanor charges, while larger incidents or repeat offenses could potentially result in felony charges.
In this case, Hannah said restaurant staff officially waived the charges, so there would be no legal consequences.
Social Media Users React
Many commenters online supported Hannah and believed the restaurant mishandled the situation.
Some users argued the restaurant should have informed customers that television filming could impact service and potentially place diners on camera.
Others said management should have offered additional compensation, such as gift cards or invitations to return for another meal.
Despite receiving free food, Hannah said she was still disappointed with the overall experience and felt the restaurant did not fully make up for the long wait and inconvenience.
