Police believe the father killed the baby with a pacifier so he could go back to sleep

An Ohio man is facing aggravated murder charges after allegedly suffocating his 4-month-old daughter with a pacifier out of frustration.

The Incident
Chance Terrence Topp, 28, allegedly killed his infant daughter on October 13, 2023, in Utica while her mother was at work. Deputies were called after the baby was found unresponsive at a Crestview Drive residence. The child was transported to Licking Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead.

Investigation Findings
A 20-month investigation revealed red marks on the baby’s neck, bruising on her jawline, and positive delta-8 THC in her system. Family members said Topp often ignored the infant, stayed up late playing video games, and drank alcohol. Investigators determined Topp held the pacifier forcefully in the baby’s mouth, causing asphyxia.

Charges
Topp faces a 13-count superseding indictment including:

  • Aggravated murder
  • Two counts of murder
  • Two counts of involuntary manslaughter
  • Felonious assault
  • Strangulation
  • Reckless homicide
  • Domestic violence
  • Falsification
  • Two counts of endangering children

Legal Status
Topp is being held at Licking County Jail on $200,000 bond. His jury trial is scheduled to begin on July 27.

Family Statement
The baby’s grandmother, Amy Richter, called her granddaughter “Our Smiley Riley” and urged people to “be kind and share some smiles for Riley.”
