It provoked ALS: A mother of six died after contracting Lou Gehrig's disease from drinking bottled water, according to her family's complaint

A Nevada family is suing Real Water and its majority shareholder, Affinitylifestyles.com Inc., after claiming their mother developed ALS from drinking bottled water purchased at Costco.

Lawsuit Details

The lawsuit alleges that Addie Coggs, 49, of Las Vegas, contracted ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, due to hydrazine in the water—a chemical used in rocket fuel and known as a liver toxin. Coggs died on September 10, 2019. The family claims she had no other significant chemical exposures prior to her diagnosis.

Alleged Cause

According to the complaint, hydrazine was formed during Real Water’s production process when electrified titanium tubes were used to treat the water concentrate. The family alleges the contaminated water led to Coggs’ ALS and eventual death.

Broader Impact

The complaint states that at least 90 other people suffered injuries from Real Water, including liver failure, miscarriages, and other health issues. Real Water ceased operations in June 2021 after a 2021 FDA report highlighted safety violations.

Attorney Statement

Attorney Will Kemp, representing the family, said, “Addie drank Real Water, it triggered ALS, and she died of Lou Gehrig’s disease… Hydrazine is a known toxin that attacks the liver and triggers ALS.”
