Three police officers were injured in a standoff with a gunman in Syracuse, New York, on May 9, 2026. The incident began around 10 a.m. when the Syracuse Police Department (SPD) reported shots fired in the area of “The Bricks” near Tyler Court.

The Standoff

Authorities warned the public to avoid the area and seek alternate routes as shots were actively being fired at police. About three hours later, the SPD confirmed that the situation was still active, urging nearby residents to shelter in place.

By 4:30 p.m., the SPD reported that the suspect had been taken into custody, and the immediate threat to the public had been neutralized. Police Chief Mark Rusin later confirmed that two officers had been shot in the arm, while a third officer sustained a hand injury.

All three officers were transported to local hospitals but their injuries were not life-threatening. Two of the officers were released later in the day, while one remained hospitalized.

Investigation and Charges

The identity of the suspect has not been released, but he was also provided medical care at the scene before being taken to the hospital. The Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office is considering charges of attempted murder, assault, and criminal weapons possession. The suspect is expected to be arraigned on May 10, 2026.

The scene remained active as police continued their investigation into the incident.
