A Pennsylvania man is behind bars after allegedly starting a deadly fire in a residential building, with authorities claiming the arson was sparked by a woman rejecting his romantic advances. The incident, which led to the death of one woman and injuries to others, occurred late Wednesday night in the small town of Lewistown, located roughly halfway between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
Fatal Fire Claims Life of Woman
The fire broke out around 11:55 p.m. at a residence on Bratton Avenue in Lewistown Borough. The property owner had been subletting the house to various tenants, including 44-year-old Brandy Phillippe. Unfortunately, Phillippe did not survive the blaze, despite attempts to escape the building. The Mifflin County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Phillippe died at the scene.
Witnesses to the fire reported seeing several people trapped inside, as the flames rapidly consumed the home. Two other residents were injured in the blaze—one man suffered severe facial injuries after jumping from a second-floor window, while another woman fell from a window after being seen hanging from it.
Zimmerman’s Alleged Motive
Robert Zimmerman, 40, was arrested in connection with the fire after several witnesses identified him at the scene. According to law enforcement, Zimmerman had expressed his love to a woman living in the building but was rejected. Investigators believe this emotional setback led Zimmerman to set fire to items on the first floor of the residence.
Witnesses claim that Zimmerman admitted to starting the fire and then watched the flames from a nearby alley. Surveillance footage from the area confirmed the witness statements.
Arrest and Police Investigation
Zimmerman was arrested a short time later at a boarding house on East Third Street. Upon his arrest, he was reportedly covered in ash and smoke and showed signs of having overdosed. He was taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention before being cleared and brought to the police station for questioning.
During his interview, Zimmerman reportedly claimed that he could not recall the exact moment the fire started but was able to recount events before and after the blaze began. He also showed an emotional reaction when he learned that a victim had died in the fire.
Charges Expected
Authorities are continuing to investigate the case, and formal charges are expected to be filed against Zimmerman in the near future. The tragic incident highlights the devastating impact that emotional distress can have on individuals and the people around them when not properly addressed.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of the fire, the investigation into Zimmerman’s role in the fatal arson continues to unfold.
