LEXINGTON, S.C. – An early morning crash involving a Lexington County Sheriff’s Department patrol vehicle is currently under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Crash Happened at Busy Lexington Intersection

The accident occurred at the intersection of Columbia Avenue/US-378 and Reed Avenue in the town of Lexington. The crash temporarily forced officials to shut down all lanes in the area while emergency crews responded and cleared debris from the roadway.

By around 8:40 a.m., Lexington Police confirmed that Columbia Avenue had reopened to traffic. However, West Butler Street remained closed for a longer period due to debris left behind from the collision.

Driver Reportedly Ran Red Light

According to Lexington Police, the crash happened after another driver ran a red light because the sun was in their eyes. That vehicle then struck the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department patrol car before both vehicles came to rest in the intersection.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol, which routinely investigates crashes on South Carolina roadways, responded to handle the investigation.

Deputy Found Not at Fault

Lexington Police stated that the South Carolina Highway Patrol determined the deputy driving the patrol vehicle was not at fault in the collision.

No additional information about injuries or possible charges has been released at this time as the investigation continues.
