CHESTER, S.C. – South Carolina state police are now leading the investigation after a deadly shooting in Chester claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy and left another person injured.

Teenager Killed in Sunday Night Shooting

According to Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker, Avery O’Brien West died at the scene after being shot Sunday night around 8:30 p.m. on Pinckney Street in Chester.

Officials said a second person was also wounded during the shooting. However, authorities have not released the victim’s identity or age.

SLED Takes Over Investigation

The Chester Police Department confirmed the shooting in a statement shared on social media and with local news outlets. Although Chester has its own police department, city officials requested that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) take over the homicide investigation.

A spokesperson for SLED said the investigation remains active, but no arrests have been made at this time.

Chester County Sheriff Max Dorsey also confirmed that sheriff’s deputies assisted officers at the scene following the shooting.

Second Homicide in the Region in Two Days

The deadly shooting marks the second homicide reported in the Rock Hill region within two days. Earlier, a man was killed in a shooting in York late Friday night. Authorities later arrested a suspect in that case the following day.

Investigators continue working to gather information and determine what led to the Chester shooting.
