North Charleston, S.C. – A 64-year-old man has been arrested after police say he stole copper worth more than $30,000 from a hospital construction site. The incident took place at the site of the new Roper Hospital on Mall Drive.
Burglary Report at Construction Site
According to the North Charleston Police Department, officers responded to the site on Tuesday after receiving a report of a burglary. A construction foreman informed police that copper had been taken from the rear left side of the building.
Investigation Leads to Suspect
After looking into the case, officers identified Lenard Brightman, 64, as the suspect. Detectives from the Property Crime Unit worked on the case and were able to recover most of the stolen copper during the investigation.
Arrest and Charges
Brightman was taken into custody the following day. He has been charged with:
- Second-degree burglary
- Theft of nonferrous metals
He was later booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center.
