A 24‑year‑old Arizona woman, Heather Arriaga, is accused of fatally shooting 54‑year‑old Stephen Guardino in a road rage incident in Phoenix last September, allegedly firing a single shot to his neck after a confrontation at a red light.
What happened at the scene
The shooting occurred on September 27, 2025, near the intersection of 7th and Missouri Avenues, south of Bethany Home Road, across the street from a Starbucks. Witnesses say Arriaga and Guardino were in a tense exchange, weaving closely between lanes, before Guardino allegedly spit on her. Moments later, Arriaga—still sitting in her car—shot Guardino, who was outside or near the vehicle.
Eyewitnesses who rushed to help described the scene as “gruesome,” saying Arriaga remained in her car and did not attempt to render aid while Guardino bled out. One witness quoted her as saying:
“I shot him. I’m sorry. He ran up to my car. I was scared. He got in my face, I shot him.”
Police reports and court documents indicate Arriaga later walked into Phoenix Police headquarters on a Monday evening around 6 p.m. and self‑surrendered after a manslaughter warrant was issued.
Victim and pending case
Guardino, remembered in an obituary as “Tata Steve,” was described as a kind, humorous, and creative man who was beloved by his family, including grandchildren through his stepsons. His family characterized his death as a senseless road‑rage killing.
Arriaga faces a manslaughter charge and is scheduled to be arraigned on April 14. The case has drawn attention to how quickly brief, angry confrontations in traffic can escalate into deadly shootings, especially when a firearm is involved.
