Shirley Johnson, a 55‑year‑old grandmother in St. Louis, Missouri, was shot and killed in front of her grandson after a minor car bump escalated into a deadly confrontation. The incident happened on March 31, 2026, when her 16‑year‑old grandson, Markel McCurry, accidentally backed into a neighbor’s car just outside their home.
How the shooting happened
- Jamal Jones, 32, whose car was struck, allegedly opened fire on the vehicle immediately after the collision, saying he meant to “intimidate” the grandson so he would not hit the car again.
- Jones later told police in a recorded interview that he “would have rather shot him [the grandson] than her,” a statement captured in the probable‑cause affidavit.
- McCurry had gotten out of the car to offer to pay for the damage when he heard the gunshot, then noticed blood and realized his grandmother, sitting in the front seat, had been shot in the back. She was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The grandson’s reaction and loss
- McCurry described being in “shock,” saying he heard the shot, went to check the damage, and then saw blood coming from his grandmother’s body. He told KMOV he feels guilt for not being able to “save” her, even though he was the one trying to make things right.
- The two were extremely close: McCurry recalled that Johnson would text him every time she cooked, saying, “I’m cooking today, baby,” and said he now knows he will never get those messages again.
- He created a GoFundMe to help cope with the loss, writing that his grandmother was shot and killed right in front of him, underscoring the trauma of witnessing her death.
Charges and legal status
- Jones was arrested and charged with:
- First‑degree murder
- Armed criminal action
- Unlawful use of a weapon
- Assault
- According to his defense attorney, Jones works at a post office, has no prior criminal record, and is currently experiencing “memory issues.” A bond hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday, with his detention status still pending.
The case has drawn attention as a tragic example of how a routine fender bender can spiral into a fatal shooting when someone chooses violence instead of calm resolution, leaving a family—especially a grieving teenager—forever changed.
