Zaki Davis, a 26‑year‑old North Carolina man, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the first‑degree murder of his girlfriend’s 7‑month‑old son, Israel Williams, whom he beat to death while babysitting. The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office says the crime occurred on December 17, 2021, in a home in northwest Charlotte.
What happened that night
Davis was watching Israel while the boy’s mother was at work. He fed the baby, texted photos to her, and even sent a picture of his mother holding Israel at 9:23 p.m. Sometime after that, Davis took Israel upstairs and inflicted “non‑accidental trauma,” the press release says. Less than 30 minutes later, the infant was unresponsive and later died; his death was ruled a homicide. The DA’s statement does not specify what triggered the attack.
Evidence and timeline
Cellphone data showed Davis searched phrases like “baby acting lifeless” and “baby not responding but heart is” before calling 911 just before 10 p.m. Paramedics rushed Israel to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Davis was arrested a few days later and has remained in Mecklenburg County Jail since then.
Sentencing and message
Davis was convicted of first‑degree murder last month and formally sentenced on Wednesday—marked as the first day of Child Abuse Prevention Month. District Attorney Spencer B. Merriweather III framed the case as a stark reminder of the community’s responsibility to support families and protect children, saying April is a time to “foster caring communities and to protect all children.”
