A deeply disturbing child abuse case in Minnesota is moving toward a conclusion as one of the accused prepares to plead guilty. The case has shocked many due to the extent of injuries suffered by a young child.
Woman to Plead Guilty in Child’s Death
Authorities say 24-year-old Shiann Lynn Erickson will formally plead guilty in connection with the 2024 death of 3-year-old Eastyn Deronjic.
Erickson is currently facing second-degree murder charges and is expected to appear in court on April 7 for a change of plea hearing.
Child Found Unresponsive with Severe Injuries
Police from the Moorhead Police Department responded to an emergency call in March 2024 about a child who was not breathing.
When first responders arrived, they found Eastyn with multiple bruises across his body. He was taken to the hospital but sadly died shortly after.
Autopsy Revealed Months of Abuse
According to medical reports, the child suffered severe injuries, including a fatal blow that caused internal damage. Investigators also found that he had multiple other injuries across his body, indicating ongoing abuse over time.
The case revealed that Eastyn and his younger sibling had been staying with Erickson and another adult for an extended period.
Co-Defendant Already Sentenced
Erickson’s co-defendant, Rosa E. Garza, has already pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Under state law, Garza must serve a significant portion of the sentence before being eligible for supervised release.
Conflicting Statements and Evidence
Both accused individuals initially gave explanations for the child’s injuries, claiming accidents like falls caused the bruises. However, investigators found evidence that contradicted these claims.
Text messages and other findings suggested awareness of abusive behaviour, raising serious concerns about what the child experienced before his death.
Younger Sibling Placed in Protection
Following the incident, the victim’s younger sibling was removed from the home and placed under protective care to ensure safety.
Case Nearing Legal Resolution
Erickson was previously expected to go to trial, but her decision to plead guilty may bring some closure to the case. The court proceedings will determine her final sentence.
