A deeply disturbing case in Pennsylvania has drawn renewed attention as authorities intensify efforts to locate a fugitive father accused of severe neglect that led to his son’s death.
Reward Increased to Capture Fugitive Father
Authorities have raised the reward to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of Vernon Hatchett, who is accused in connection with the death of his 21-year-old son, Tylim Hatchett.
The announcement was made by Kevin R. Steele along with local law enforcement officials. Hatchett, who also uses the name Khaliyl Ward, has been missing for over a year.
Serious Charges Filed
Hatchett is facing multiple felony charges, including neglect of a dependent resulting in death, abuse of a dependent, and conspiracy to commit involuntary manslaughter.
Prosecutors say his son was completely dependent on caregivers due to his condition and required constant care, food, and medication.
Victim Found in Critical Condition
Authorities responded to a home in Dresher, Pennsylvania, where they found Tylim Hatchett severely underweight and unresponsive. He weighed just 59 pounds at the time of his death.
An autopsy later confirmed that he died due to complications related to cerebral palsy combined with prolonged neglect. His death was ruled a homicide.
Pattern of Neglect Uncovered
Investigators revealed that the victim had lost a significant amount of weight in a short period, dropping from 91 pounds to 59 pounds in about seven months.
They also found that he was left alone for long periods, sometimes up to 24 hours at a time, without proper care, food, or medication.
Mother and Caregiver Already Sentenced
Tylim’s mother, Sherrilynn Hawkins, has already pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including third-degree murder. She has been sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison.
Another individual involved, Loretta Harris, received probation after pleading guilty to related charges.
Authorities say both women were paid as caregivers but often failed to provide proper care.
Ongoing Search and Public Appeal
Law enforcement continues to search for Hatchett and is urging the public to come forward with any information. Officials have stressed that he should not be approached, and anyone who sees him should contact police immediately.
