Inmate discovered unresponsive at the Charleston County Detention Center dies.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office says an inmate has died after being found unresponsive earlier this month at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center.

Deputies responded to the facility on Feb. 10 just before 3:30 p.m. after the inmate became unresponsive in the Processing Unit. A detention center nurse immediately began CPR, according to initial reports.

Emergency Response and Hospitalization

Charleston County EMS and the North Charleston Fire Department responded to assist with medical care. Emergency personnel were able to restore the inmate’s pulse before transporting them to the Medical University of South Carolina for further treatment.

Officials said the inmate was admitted to the hospital and later released from custody while receiving medical care. The individual died three days after being hospitalized.

State Investigation Underway

The sheriff’s office has requested that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigate the incident. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the inmate’s identity.
