The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office has identified skeletal remains discovered eight months ago in Moncks Corner as 47-year-old Charles Litchfield.
Coroner Darnell Hartwell confirmed that Litchfield was positively identified through DNA testing. His remains were located near Stoney Landing Road on June 19, 2025, following a joint investigation involving the coroner’s office and the Moncks Corner Police Department.
Missing Since Late 2019
Litchfield had been reported missing in early January 2020. Police responded to the 1100 block of Dennis Boulevard after receiving a report from his son, who said his father had not been seen since Dec. 13, 2019.
According to the incident report, Litchfield had been staying with his sister, who has an intellectual disability. The son told officers that the two had argued and that Litchfield left the apartment that night. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a camouflage jacket and red Converse shoes.
Family members reported that Litchfield had a history of seizures and was not taking his medication at the time he disappeared.
Cause of Death Undetermined
Authorities have not yet determined the cause or manner of Litchfield’s death. Officials say the investigation remains open as they continue to review evidence related to the case.
The identification brings long-awaited answers to the family after more than five years since Litchfield was last seen.
