Wonique Broughton, 35, from Charleston, S.C., was arrested on January 28, 2026, for the fatal shooting of her husband, Arthur Broughton Jr., 39, on January 14, 2026.​

Incident Details

Police responded to a vehicle crash on Clements Ferry Road near Cainhoy Road around 7:30 a.m., finding Arthur deceased inside from a gunshot wound to the head; the car had veered off and hit a power pole. Investigators determined Wonique, a passenger, retrieved a gun from her bag and shot him while he drove, after which she was hospitalized. She reportedly told police she acted because he was assaulting her and some children not present in the vehicle.

Charges and Custody

Broughton faces charges of murder and possession of a firearm during a violent crime, and she remains at Berkeley County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing. No mugshot was immediately released.
