Charleston has been added to Uber's list of cities with preferences for women.

Uber’s Women Preferences pilot program has expanded to Charleston, South Carolina, allowing women riders and drivers to opt for same-gender matches, with new support for teen accounts. This feature boosts comfort and choice, responding to feedback from users since its U.S. pilot launch in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Detroit earlier in 2025.

How Riders Use It

Women riders can select “Women Drivers” for on-demand trips, reserve rides in advance with a woman driver, or toggle the preference in app settings to increase matching odds—though matches are not guaranteed. Teen account users and guardians in supported cities now see the same options, addressing long-standing parent requests.

How Drivers Use It

Women drivers activate “Women Rider Preference” in the Uber Driver app settings to receive only female rider requests, which they can toggle off anytime, including during peak hours. Cancellations due to mismatched gender at pickup won’t impact ratings or fees if “I selected trips with women riders” is selected.

Expansion Details

The program rolled out to 26 more U.S. cities recently, including Charleston, as part of Uber’s nationwide push after positive pilot feedback. Uber VP Camiel Irving emphasized listening to women for more control, building on global versions first launched in Saudi Arabia in 2019. About 20% of U.S. Uber drivers are women, varying by market.
