Columbia, S.C. – Authorities in Sumter County are investigating the deaths of Kristen N. Grissom, 38, of North Charleston, and Christine Marie McAbee, 35, of Walterboro, whose bodies were discovered in a field last month. The North Charleston Police Department is assisting the Sumter County Sheriff’s Department in the investigation, as both victims are believed to have known each other.
Discovery of the Bodies
On Friday, August 8, at approximately 1:17 p.m., a landowner discovered the bodies of the two women in a clearing near Richbow Road in Rembert, Sumter County. Sumter County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene shortly after the discovery.
Cause of Death
According to Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker, Christine McAbee’s death was confirmed as a homicide caused by a gunshot wound. However, the cause of Kristen Grissom’s death was not immediately determined. Authorities are still awaiting toxicology reports to help determine how she died. Investigators believe that Grissom’s body may have been placed in the field after her death, suggesting she likely died elsewhere.
Investigation and Public Safety
Sheriff Anthony Dennis stated that the incident appears isolated, and there is no known danger to the public at this time. However, the investigation is ongoing, and the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is pursuing multiple leads.
To aid in solving the case, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
