Summerville police increase patrols and checkpoints to promote safe driving during Labor Day

The Summerville Police Department is stepping up enforcement this Labor Day weekend with extra patrols and DUI checkpoints to help reduce accidents and keep the community safe.

When and Where

Starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, officers will increase their presence on local roads. Two primary checkpoint locations include:

Stallsville Loop

W. Richardson Avenue

The focus will be on identifying and stopping reckless or intoxicated drivers before they cause harm.

Safety Message to the Community

Police emphasized that their top priority is ensuring everyone gets home safely after Labor Day celebrations.

They urge residents to plan ahead:

Choose a designated driver before going out

Call a friend or family member if needed

Use a taxi or ride-share service to avoid driving under the influence

Why It Matters

DUI-related crashes continue to be a leading cause of preventable deaths and injuries. Summerville police say targeted enforcement is one way to keep tragedy off the roads during a holiday weekend known for heavy travel and celebrations.
