Western Wisconsin & Twin Cities Weather: Thunderstorms Tuesday, Cooler Temperatures Midweek

A change in the weather is on the way for Minnesota and western Wisconsin, as strong thunderstorms are expected to move through the region on Tuesday, followed by a noticeable cool-down for the rest of the week.

Thunderstorms Expected Tuesday Across the Region

The National Weather Service (NWS) Twin Cities has issued alerts for widespread thunderstorms on Tuesday due to a cold front sweeping into the area. The system is likely to bring:

Heavy rainfall

Strong, gusty winds

The potential for damaging wind gusts, especially in the afternoon and evening

Areas most at risk include the Twin Cities metro, St. Cloud, Mankato, and nearby towns in southern and central Minnesota.

Rain chances surge to over 80% by Tuesday afternoon, with storms expected to weaken and move out overnight. Scattered showers may still linger into Wednesday morning.

Sharp Temperature Drop Midweek

Once the storms pass, the region will feel a much cooler air mass settle in. Highs will drop into the 60s and low 70s on Wednesday, a noticeable dip from the upper 70s and low 80s earlier in the week.

By Thursday and Friday, daytime highs will hover in the mid to upper 60s, while overnight lows will dip into the low 50s, and even upper 40s in some rural areas.

Safety Tips During the Storm

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware and take basic precautions, especially on Tuesday:

Secure outdoor furniture and objects that can blow away

Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours or high winds

Watch for water-covered roads, especially in low-lying areas

Be alert for fallen branches or power outages during strong gusts

If conditions worsen, additional weather advisories or severe thunderstorm warnings may be issued.

Cooler, Breezy Weather Ahead

After Tuesday’s stormy conditions, the rest of the week will feel much calmer but breezy and cool, marking a noticeable shift toward early autumn weather.

Expect crisp mornings, pleasant afternoons, and cooler evenings, making it a good time to bring out light jackets and prepare gardens or outdoor spaces for the changing season.
