Western Virginia Weather Update: Cooler Air, Breezy Conditions Continue into Midweek

If you’re in Western Virginia, you’re likely enjoying a welcome break from the usual late-August heat. Thanks to a fresh cooldown, much of the region is seeing below-average temperatures, mild afternoons, and gusty breezes—a shift that will continue into the middle of the week.

Temperatures Dip Below Normal Across the Region

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, highs today will stay well below seasonal norms, with cooler air especially noticeable west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Expected highs today:

Blacksburg: Lower 70s

Roanoke: Near 77°F

Danville & Lynchburg: Warmer, near 82°F

West of the Blue Ridge: Mid-60s to mid-70s

East of the Ridge: Mid-70s to low 80s

This cooler stretch is running about 5 to 15 degrees below normal, giving residents a taste of early fall weather before summer returns.

Gusty Winds Up to 20 MPH

In addition to the drop in temperature, today will bring breezy conditions across much of the region. Winds will gust between 10 and 20 mph, strongest across higher elevations and ridges.

Wind-prone areas to watch:

I-81 Corridor

U.S. 460

Open rural roads and hilltops

Drivers of high-profile vehicles should use extra caution during afternoon hours when gusts may briefly affect handling. Outdoor activities will remain pleasant, but it’s a good idea to secure loose items like umbrellas, chairs, or patio furniture.

Comfortable Evenings and Cool Nights Ahead

As the sun sets, the cool air will linger, making for pleasant and comfortable evenings. Overnight lows will drop into the 50s and low 60s, especially in valleys and more rural spots. It’s a good time to open the windows and give your A/C a break.

Midweek Outlook: More of the Same Before a Slow Warmup

This cooler-than-usual pattern is expected to hold steady through midweek, with breezy afternoons continuing and temperatures slowly trending back toward normal by the weekend.

What to expect:

Continued cool days and mild nights through Thursday

Light winds to moderate gusts daily

Gradual warming trend starting Friday
