Western New York Storm Alert: Strong Thunderstorms Bring Flooding Risk Until Evening

Western New York is in for a day of heavy rain and thunderstorms, which could slow travel and cause localized flooding. The storms will be most widespread in the afternoon, with conditions improving later tonight.

Thunderstorm Chances and Timing

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, thunderstorm chances will rise to 85% in Dunkirk and 80% in Springville by late morning. Buffalo, Rochester, and Batavia will have a 65-75% likelihood of storms by early afternoon. The strongest storms may bring intense but brief downpours, especially along the Lake Erie shoreline and into the Southern Tier.

Travel and Safety Concerns

Drivers should prepare for sudden reductions in visibility and ponding on roadways, particularly on the New York State Thruway, Route 219, and I-390. Outdoor events and festivals could face temporary delays as storms pass through. Residents are advised to secure tents and outdoor items ahead of gusty winds.

Clearing and Calmer Conditions Tonight

By tonight, drier and cooler air will begin to push into the region, setting up a calmer stretch as we move into the workweek. Monday is expected to bring partly sunny skies and more comfortable conditions throughout Western New York.
